I wanted to include the feed of this blog to WebDesignM.cz to provide fresh and related dynamic content on the home page. This, being a static static, HTML only website is not that straight forward. There must be a javascript or iframe inserted in the HTML of the page to achieve this. I looked into it on google and I found a lot of solutions, also for free.
I wanted it to fit nicely on the page, like it’s part of it and not an obvious widget so I was looking for one that is free and has CSS customization options. I also wanted something that is of course fast to install to get it out of the way quickly and I wanted it to be free also. First I tried FeedEK. Well, I tried many that resulted in something really ugly or useless. I quite liked FeedEk, it’s very easy to install and customize. The only problem I had with it was that I couldn’t limit the feed item descriptions. When I disabled the descriptions I at least wanted it appear in the title tag in the feed links. I played with the javascript and it worked but only for Items that didn’t have the “read the rest” link in them. When they did it broke the item showing “read the rest” instead of the title. So I looked further.
I found Feedroll. Feedroll was even quicker to install, no need to place the javascript on the server, it comes through feedroll.com, just copy the code that can be customized right there beforehand. Apart from the CSS that can be finalized on the page or in the stylesheet, or you can even use their Style Tool, that lets you choose from several presets which, even if you don’t like the outcome is very useful as it generates the CSS for the feed that you can customize later to your liking. It saves you time. With Feedroll I could limit the number of characters in the feed descriptions and style it as I wanted it. Perfect.
